“ Because true happiness, young people, does not consist in the pleasures of the world and in earthly things, but in peace of conscience, which we can have only if we are pure in heart and in mind.
Pier Giorgio Frassati
(from a speech to Catholic Youth of Pollone, 1923)
To Associations, parishes, schools and groups named after Pier Giorgio,
To those entrusted with youth ministry, university ministry, seminaries,
To institutes, all religious communities, and to all friends of Pier Giorgio
The 6th of April is approaching, the 120th birthday of Pier Giorgio. Like every year, we will not celebrate it without giving him the gift of fulfilling the promise he asked of all his friends.”I would like for us to pledge a pact which knows no earthly boundaries nor temporal limits: union in prayer.” (letter to I.Bonini, January 15th 1925)
Our prayer will be a Rosary for all young people; asking that they be sustained and illumined by the grace of chastity.
The reason for such a particular intention, as the word chastity rarely used and so unpopular, is due to the fact that 100 years ago, Pier Giorgio joined the Confraternity of the Angelic Warfare. It’s aim was to provide support in the virtue of chastity, under the patronage of St. Thomas Aquinas and the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is wonderful that our centennial coincides with the Pope’s dedication of this year to St. Joseph.
With his commitment to the Angelic Warfare, Pier Giorgio completed an act that was the cornerstone of his charity. Chastity indeed concerns all aspects of life; whereas we can be chaste physically, but still be selfish, proud, dispersive, worldly, and other things.
“His adherence is today a prophetic answer to the squandering world, whose pinnacle is in the power of media, the egocentric world that chains the young generations to an unfortunate sphere of deception. We are coming out of a year in which, for many, computer and social networks were the only sphere where true life was lived. For many, these environments provided occasions of developing dependencies, some whose symptoms were relational distress (more/less profound), interior short-circuits, and great solitude.
“Taking advantage of this date which allows us to spend some time with Pier Giorgio, to pray with him, we would like to ask him to help and enlighten all young people, all of us, to grow and walk in love, as he walked. A love that is one of soul and of body, whose center is the possession and gift of self, in relationship with the Lord and in the happiness of the gift.” (Don Paolo Asolan)
“Purity and charity were the most evident expressions of this joyful youth: a purity without scruples, insecurity, cowardice, a virile and serene control of the senses.” (Card. G. Lercaro). We are certain that through the apostolate of persuasion, which for Pier Giorgio is the most beautiful, he will carry many along the path that he travelled: the one that brought him, as Saint John Paul II said, “to transform his life into a marvelous adventure.” (20.V.1990)
